Taste the Miracle Berry at a Flavor-Tripping Event at The Standard

Back in 2008 flavor tripping parties in New York City featured what’s known as the miracle berry.

This small red berry rewires your palate and, when eaten, causes sour or tart foods to sudden taste sweet.

And now it’s made its way to the Islands, with a flavor-tripping event on March 7 at The Standard.

The miracle fruit, Synsepalum dulcificum, is native to West Africa and known to Westerners since the 18th century. But it began to surface as a miracle fruit in the ’60s when it was discovered the fruit contained a large glycoprotein, called miraculin. When it’s eaten, the miraculin binds with the taste buds and acts as a sweetness inducer when it comes into contact with acidic foods.

Sound interesting?

Try it at this flavor-tripping flavor event on Wednesday and see how lemons taste like candy and vinegar like sugar syrup.

It’s a trip.

Cost is $55 online or $60 at the door. Proceeds support local charities C.H.E.F.S. Hawaii and Men’s Leadership Hawaii. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.flavortrippinghawaii.com.

$55 online/$60 at the door, 6 – 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 7 at The Standard, flavortrippinghawaii.com
