What Is Adiponectin?
Last reviewed: May 2026 · Haute MD Editorial Team
Adiponectin is a hormone secreted by fat cells that improves insulin sensitivity, reduces inflammation, and supports healthy fat metabolism. Unlike most fat-derived hormones, adiponectin levels are inversely related to body fat — they fall as obesity develops. Low adiponectin is associated with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome.
Why adiponectin matters
Adiponectin enhances insulin signaling in muscle and liver, promotes fatty-acid oxidation, and lowers vascular inflammation. Higher levels are protective against metabolic disease.
Why levels fall with obesity
As fat cells enlarge and become inflamed, adiponectin production drops while pro-inflammatory cytokines rise. This shift contributes to insulin resistance and worsens metabolic health.
How to raise adiponectin
Weight loss, regular aerobic exercise, omega-3 fatty acids, sleep, and replacing refined carbohydrates with fiber-rich foods all raise adiponectin. Some medications, including thiazolidinediones and GLP-1 agents, also increase it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can adiponectin be tested?
Yes, though it is not part of standard panels. It is mainly used in research and specialty metabolic clinics.
Does fasting raise adiponectin?
Intermittent fasting and time-restricted eating have been shown to modestly increase adiponectin.
Does muscle mass affect adiponectin?
Higher muscle mass and improved fitness are associated with better adiponectin signaling.
Is low adiponectin a disease?
It is not a diagnosis itself, but it is a marker of metabolic dysfunction and increased disease risk.
