What Is the American Board of Dermatology?
Last reviewed: May 2026 · Haute MD Editorial Team
The American Board of Dermatology (ABD) is the ABMS-recognized board certifying physicians in dermatology. ABD certification requires graduation from medical school, completion of one year of internship, completion of an accredited 3-year dermatology residency, and passing written and oral certification examinations covering medical dermatology, surgical dermatology, dermatopathology, and pediatric dermatology.
What ABD covers
Diagnosis and treatment of conditions of skin, hair, and nails; dermatologic surgery including biopsies, excisions, and skin cancer treatment; cosmetic dermatology including injectables, lasers, and resurfacing; dermatopathology basics.
Subspecialty certifications
ABD offers subspecialty certification in dermatopathology, pediatric dermatology, and Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (Mohs surgery), each requiring additional 1-2 year fellowship training.
Verifying ABD certification
Search certificationmatters.org or abderm.org. Confirm certification status (current vs lapsed) and original certification date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all dermatologists board certified?
No. Any licensed physician can offer dermatologic services. Board certification is voluntary, which is why verifying matters.
Is there a separate board for cosmetic dermatology?
No ABMS-recognized one. Cosmetic dermatology training comes through ABD residency, fellowships, and continuing education.
What is fellowship-trained dermatology?
Additional 1-2 year training in a specific area such as Mohs surgery, dermatopathology, pediatric dermatology, or cosmetic/laser surgery.
Does ABD certification cover injectables?
Yes — injectables are taught in ABD residencies. ABD-certified dermatologists are appropriate providers for Botox and fillers.
