The Inevitable Domination of Donny Deutsch
From Deutsch Inc. to the CNBC Studios to his home on Park Avenue, Haute Living spends a day with Donny Deutsch and learns that there is no stopping this media mogul.

Post-Production by HDM, www.HDMstudio.com Donny Deutsch was born to lead. He’s an unstoppable force in whatever world he happens to be in at the moment, whether it be advertising or television, real estate or politics. He may call himself a “member of the lucky sperm club,” but I think he is not giving himself enough credit-everything he touches seems to turn to gold. He has a knack for success with a larger-than-life personality to match, and an unassuming jean-clad nonchalance that belies his ingenuity.
His non-stop personality is almost hard to keep up with. I met up with Deutsch at 8 a.m. at Deutsch Inc., the advertising headquarters that encompasses an entire city block in Manhattan and houses more than 800 employees. He attended to some office business while our photographer set up for the photo shoot, but gave me his undivided attention for the first stages of our interview. From there, we were off to the New Jersey studios of CNBC for another photo shoot followed by a mid-day filming of The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, a show dedicated to showcasing the know-how of some of the nation’s most successful businessmen as well as that of budding entrepreneurs. It is a show based on the American dream, which Deutsch himself is certainly living. He has taken his own big ideas and parlayed them into an unstoppable empire that is on point to take control of New York City.
BIG IDEA: Advertising
Deutsch’s father, David, began a small advertising agency in 1969, which the younger Deutsch began working for following his stint at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Advertising proved to be the perfect outlet for Deutsch’s unrelenting creative energies. “I always knew I wanted to incorporate business and art, and do something that had some sort of creative endeavor, whether it was television or advertising,” he says. “I’m a businessman, in fact I’d like to think that I am a fairly shrewd one, but I needed to be doing something that incorporated some sort of creative content.”
When Deutsch joined his father at David Deutsch Associates, the highly regarded boutique firm, he didn’t take his position as seriously as he should have, leading his father to fire him. In 1984, his father received an offer for his agency, but Deutsch asked him not to sell. “I wanted to come back to the company, but not as an account rep,” he says. “I wanted to come back and win new business.”
When he went back to his father’s agency, he was handed the reigns and the company just took off. Today, Deutsch Inc. does more than $2.5 billion in dealings per year. “I hired some really great people,” Deutsch recalls. “We started to create an agency within an agency. My dad’s agency was more print-orientated, a little more high-end. I was doing a bit more populist work, and things really took off.” Deutsch’s roster of big name clients grew to include the likes of Pontiac, IKEA, Mitsubishi, and Pfizer. Then they landed Bank of America, which launched a global campaign in 37 countries, a turning point that sealed the company’s status as a major player. Other top brands followed suit, relying on Deutsch Inc. to brand their companies for a worldwide market. GM, Johnson & Johnson, DirectTV, and Novartis Worldwide: all of these outstanding brands invested their faith-and dollars-in Deutsch’s firm. Today, Deutsch Inc. is one of the top 10 advertising companies in the world.
Deutsch Inc. prides itself on being one of the first full-service, integrated agencies to put media, interactive, direct design, and public relations together under one roof. Innovative marketing tactics-from hanging a hammock between parking meters in order to showcase IKEA, to creating an online theory about flying cars to spark interest for General Motors-continuously propel the company to the forefront of the advertising industry. As is their motto, “The World is our Medium,” and as such, they utilize every available platform to the fullest extent through creative endeavors that embrace ideas both big and small.
Deutsch sold the company to Interpublic Group in 2000 for close to $300 million. “What’s great about Deutsch Inc. is that it was started by my dad and I took it to another level, and now there is a fantastic team that is taking it to another level. Any great business exists within its walls. You can take a clearly defined culture and you can change 80 percent of the people in that company, and it can still thrive in the same way-that’s what a great company is about. [Deutsch Inc.] has a great culture, a great value system, and that’s what I am most proud of.
“Right now, the company is run by a fantastic team: Linda Sawyer, who is the CEO, has worked with me for 20 years; Val DiFebo, the president of Deutsch New York; and two co-presidents in L.A., Eric Hirshberg and Mike Sheldon,” he continues. “We have all been together for years. These are the people that helped build this place, so I’m more of a spiritual leader at this point.”
BIG IDEA: Television
The majority of his time is now spent attending to his highly successful television show, The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch, which launched in July 2004. Due to the great notoriety of Deutsch Inc. and of its fearless leader, Deutsch frequently appeared as a guest and guest host on Kudlow & Cramer, so when he pitched a talk show to the heads of CNBC, he was met with favorable results. With his big presence, he is a natural on camera and with his guests.
While the original focus of The Big Idea was interviews and profiles, “that got old really fast,” so the scope was broadened to chronicle and inspire the American dream through conversations with everyone from Bill Gates, Al Gore, Martha Stewart, and Ron Perelman right on down to the stay at home mom who invented a product now worth millions.
The show runs nightly at 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. on CNBC, which caters to an affluent and educated audience who can find inspiration in these triumphant stories. “What I am very proud of is that the show is positive, it’s inspiring, it’s something people need right now,” he says.
His show is marketed as the “Roadmap to the American dream,” which CNBC describes as doing what you love and making millions. “We’ve carved out this great niche about the American dream and about entrepreneurs,” he explains. “Now we are building on that and broadening it even more. [The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch] is all about going for the richer life. We’re really trying to give people the tools to succeed.
“I attribute my success to some of the same things that I always hear on my show: to following my passion, to surrounding myself with brilliant people-the best people-to not being afraid to fail, as I have made many mistakes.” He is also the first to admit that it takes a little bit of luck, and fortune has certainly smiled upon this mogul.
As such, Deutsch is constantly sought out as an expert source; the day of our meeting had him moving from his advertising agency to his show taping to the Nasdaq closing, where he was a guest on CNBC’s Fast Money. His pace is constant to the point of being unnerving. He says he is able to keep up such a rigorous schedule by being a creature of habit, allotting personal time early every evening to spend with his daughters.
Deutsch has his own big ideas for those trying to hold on to their wealth in today’s rocky market: “Keep going, man, put your foot to the pedal…. Continue to follow your passion, continue to challenge yourself, always look at the glass as half-full and see opportunities the same way.”
BIG IDEA: Real Estate
He is certainly worthy of offering such advice. There is no room for doubt that Deutsch enjoys the good life. From the townhouse he is building between Fifth and Madison and his home in Trump Park Avenue to his newly acquired piece of property in East Hampton, he wants for nothing, but doesn’t overindulge in the superficial.
His Trump Park Avenue residence is highly reflective of his success. Alive with light and colors, the space is laden with art from some of the modern masters. Hirsts, Warhols, and Basquiats mingle with pieces by Jack Pierson, Robert Indiana, and Richard Prince to create an eclectic collection that mirrors Deutsch’s epic personality.
BIG IDEA: Mayor of New York City
With self-induced rumors that he is interested in running for mayor, he confirms to me that he would love to, despite what he refers to as a “colorful” past. Twice divorced, Deutsch is one of the city’s most eligible and coveted bachelors. “I think I’d be a great mayor,” he says. “If Bloomberg doesn’t change the game, it’ll be a wide open field.” He has amassed political experience during the Clinton/Gore 1992 campaign, when he was a lead member of the communications team.
In the meantime, he is working on a follow-up to his acclaimed book, Often Wrong, Never in Doubt, which is based on his various career experiences. He also finds time to work as a managing partner of Deutsch Open City, an independent production company that has produced acclaimed independent films, and serve on the board at UPenn’s School of Social Policy & Practice Executive Committee and at the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Somehow, Deutsch manages to excel in numerous fields with seemingly little effort. He was simply destined for greatness from the moment of birth-and who knows-the people of New York may one day have the opportunity to benefit from his leadership capabilities. Until that time comes, they will just have to rely on the advice he dispenses on The Big Idea.

Dear Donny;
I came up with an idea 25 years ago but because I was working I never seamed to have time to do much with it. I officially retired January of 2008, but started working on getting my invention to patent status in the fall of 2007. I went with a company called Patent Assistance Worldwide which has taken the idea thru several hurdles but still I have no prototype. They did provide a 3-D view which can be seen on the web at www.gpl-licensing.com. I’m looking for a manufacturer to produce & market my idea, I have invested about 13K so far and would like to get a grant but don’t know how to get it. Can you tell me what I need to do now?
Sincerely Yours

Dear Donny:
I am a finder for Milliken Enviromental. Milliken Enviromental will acquire Brenford Enviromental. Simply said we are looking for 15 million to complete the aquisition and 15 million more for working capital to expand our fleet to service contracted and future business.
The “Sewer Hog” cleans, maps, and maintains small to large diameter pipes or as some say the underground infrastcture of cities, town. The EPA has become more aggresive in the enforcement of the Clean Water Act. It is estimated that 850 billion gallons of untreated sewage overflow into rivers and streams annually. The efforts of the company fits in with the Green and enviromental movement of today.
I am looking for investors wanting a 20++ ROI with a business that projects to generate significante revenue.
The company we are acquiring was part of a team that cleared 200 linear miles of the infrastucture along US Highway 90 after Katrina
I appreciate the forum and look forward to your referrals and contacts from those who have a chance to read this message.
Please contact me at 602-510-6562 for more information, and executive summary.
Consider Milliken Enviromental to be on The Big Idea. It is a great story.
Sincerely,
Michael Clark

WHAT SHOULD I DO?
August 23rd, 2008 at 7:08 pm
I have an invention that i came up with to temporary solve a problem, My invention is with Davidson designs and is now at the design stages. I don’t have the money for the prototype how can I get funding or a sponsor.
August 24th, 2008 at 3:03 am
OMG, reading all these comments after going through all those stages already and spending all the IRA and being down to selling my car to go to Vegas to the Magic Convention (Men’s Apparel) only to say it is a whole new ball game after you get prototype and inventory. Now it is time to Market and form a true company.
It is a very vulnerable stage not knowing how to run a business and having sharks
coming at you from every angle with no money, just teeth. How to find a trust worthy expert and experienced individual to take it to the next level…just wait.
Warning: Davison just sent out 3 D pieces of paper for lots of money. They did produce a prototype but it didn’t look anything like mine nor would they listen to change it like I pleaded with them to do. Get out while u can. Heeeeellllllppppp.
Can we put our website here?
August 24th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Dear Donny, I would first like to say I admire you and all your hard work. You have inspired so many with your tv show alone. I am looking for some advise on which way to go from here. I owned and operated a very successful ambulance service along with my partner for 10 years. This business was taken from me when we were convienced by our accountant of 10 years to bring on an investment group. We agreed and we had a group of doctors as the investors. After a few months into this transtion things just didn’t seem right. Our accountant elected a doctor to president of our corporation who cared nothing about anything other than to make his pockets deeper. After a few more months our accountant discovered something he feared very deeply. I still am trying to find out what that fear was to him. He was 40 years old with a loving wife and 3 very beautiful children he adored more than anything. He was a very wealthy man and a partner in a very large accounting firm. They say he took his own life but I can’t accept this due to the fact I know he loved life. This was a very hush-hush nightmare! Over the next 6 months my partner and I were lied to and led down a path that soon ended. I now have nothing! We have had attorneys who get nothing from the officers (information). I think maybe they were paid off. After all we are peons compared to the president! They have no fear. Several of the shareholders have tried to sue for their monies back and have no luck. I have always been a very hard worker. I have always surrounded myself with smart people. My accountant, attorney, supervisors and employees. You can’t even know how stupied I feel now. The officers adjoined their shares and are destroying everything I poured so much into. The people are leaving and the patients are going with other ambulance services. I have done everything I know to do and have come up empty handed. My family has suffered a great deal due to the tremendous amount of corportate debt we have aquired. I would love to write a book on the fraud they are committing and the dirty they have done. If you have any advise or direction for me please, please let me know. I know you are a very busy man but if you could find the time to contact me you would not only be steering me but 153 other people as well. Thank You so much for at least reading my cry. Joy Irwin (740)-354-7533, (740)-858-2481, cell#(740)-357-5374. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!! My hat off to all your help as well!!!!!!!!!

Donny,
I have an invention I have been working on for about 14 months! I have two prototypes built and I have tested the second for functionality and it works. I have also visited with a patent attorney and found out that a working father of four cannot afford to pay for a patent attorney. I have researched the idea on the patent office and not been able to find the exact same thing. I am starting to fill out a book called the inventor’s note book after that I am lost and need to find out who or how I can proceed with my idea! Can you give me some direction for after I try and submit my idea for a patent? I believe it is a great idea and has a very marketable and worthwhile potential. Thanks for your time and effort in regards to my message!

@Laurie Smith,
I started my own home based business 8 months ago and have been very happy with the results. It is a real business and requires work and money to get started but is also well worth the effort. You can learn more about me and the business at my website Ex-Employee.com.
@Vivian Holder,
I visited your website and admire what you’re doing for your community. One suggestion would be to share some examples of how lives are being restored by restoring houses. We all want to know that we’re helping other people and nothing does that better than a good story! That is one of the reasons that Extreme Home Makeover show has been so popular.

Hi Donny, I was wondering if possible you may or can answer my question. I have a product that I have made and was contacted by Patent Assistance Worldwide and they are sending me papers. Are they a legitimate company or one of the ones that steal your idea and or just scam you out of money?
Thank you Lori

I have a few questions for you: I had an idea and I went ahead and made something that we are actually using where I work. A customer liked what I invented and would like to have one for his company. I’m very leary about building one for them before I patent it first. They may decide to run with my idea. In the past I’ve had ideas and just gave these ideas to the companies I worked for. A few times I received a small compensation for my ideas that actually saved the company a lot of money. I think it’s time to finally do something on my own. I really don’t have the funds to patent my idea. Who should I talk to and what do you suggest I do? I’m also concerned about getting scammed. Thanks for your help.

Hey Big Spender:
I’m not here to ask you for money, I’m asking for protection & am looking for someone kind of like the guy who walks around with that big red umbrella on TV.
I am on the edge of exposing the world to the NEXT BIG IDEA, possibly eventually with your help. I often watch CNBC all day while working at home.
My first attempt to find you landed me here so I will continue until I reach you direct. BTW….great press shot for the xlnt article!
Below is written to help those who find you through this blog…..
What I have learned from my many fantastic mentors so far:
First: Anyone wanting to buy a patent: forget it. It is useless unless you can defend it. Anyone out there following Mattel Barbie vs. the MGA Bratt Dolls case? Truth and guidance on becoming a successful inventor is most concentrated on the National Inventors Fraud web site. Educate yourself. Allow 6 months minimum learning in this boot camp.
Second: Okay….convinced you have the next Million Dollar Idea? Make a sample, compile enough orders to interest partners who will then eventually make or break you. Note to self: Global out licensing steals your stuff and makes billions selling it back to major brands who already own the coveted shelf space you are dreaming about. Chin up…..with passion, preparation and luck (or what I like to call favor) you will succeed!
Third: Money=Power and Money is King (but you already knew that right?)
Fourth: Creative Content is the magic juice (the queen if you will) & invaluable to the market place. Sometimes even has the privilege to sit next to the King.
Last and most important: The road to transform your dream into reality can take a lifetime….be content during your journey.
P. S. To Neville Raymond’s earlier posting in this blog looking for the next step re: your game idea: My advice is to read the book Toy and Game Inventors Guide by Richard C Levy and Ron Weingarten. Then consider contacting Lynn @ Marra Design Associates to review your concept and possibly act as your agent. Tell her L. Dawn at Designdbl referred you. They are trustworthy and one of the best in the business.

Donny, I miss you!
I’m having withdraw symptoms! Unless I missed something announced on your show, I wasn’t aware you were on vacation from “THE BIG IDEA”………….Do hope it’s only temporary!
I’ve been wanting to contact you on every level, but have adopted this “no approach” way of thinking……….. “why would they contact me”? There is a good reason for this attitude. Whenever I’ve shared hundreds of my ideas with someone, they’ve had nothing but negative input! So, Donny, I guess you could say, I would duck and then run……………….
This is a New Year and I have a New Attitude, towards my creative abilities! I hide, no more. You have energized me more than I can state on here! Regardless the state of our economy, I have a genius idea, that I definitely feel now is the time to strike!
If it were at all possible to talk with you, I would think I was talking to my time twin………… When I watch and listen to every thing you say, it’s like a mirror image of myself! Honestly, Donny, you know what they say, like minds think alike, but of course!
My “invention/BIG IDEA” is based on advertising. In a massive, major moving, new wave media, super highway, via, “mobile view”……………That’s all I can give up at this time. If you do read your mail, and you have the time, time is what I have! If given the chance, on my brilliant idea (and I have had this one for nearly two years) this one alone, could restructure the whole advertising venue!
Here’s to our New Year, Donny, and to a new beginning for our economy. For this BIG IDEA will front many potential entrepreneurs the opportunity to own their own “piece of the pie”. I need the right people with the smarts to recognize, that this one could be the BIG ONE!
I anxiously await your response. If you/they like this IDEA, I have books full of more to come…….. Just to give you a little taste of previous thoughts/inventions/ideas……..now keep in mind ,I’m not a young one: Books on tapes when I was a young kid, no one wanted to listen to me……..”Craig’s List”, long ago I solicited that one, only in paper format. No go, and you know how that one played out for him! I could go on and on……. The one I initiated at one time, still hasn’t been done by anyone (it’s like a Goggle idea, and is also recession proof)……………
My “REAL” profession? Let’s say this, “I’ve worked with Donald Trump, his daughter, film stars, models, entertainers, etc………….as an artist, my creative mind never slows down, which I’ve been greatly rewarded! To be completely fulfilled, would be to meet with you Donny, my mentor…………..
Till our meeting, Shalom.

Donny, I have watched many times your program and I am convinced the idea that I have is really BIG. I want to know how can I contact someone on your staff to present this invention. It is already in the process of being patented but I do need money to start marketing this product to a comapny that can produce it and sell it.
Please have someone contact me at portacart@aol.com or my cell phone 954 394 3256.
Thanks for your attention,

Donny:
I have an idea for a game show that I think is great and original. Need some advice about how to proceed. Who and how to present my idea without my idea being “borrowed”.
Thanks for doing “The Big Idea”. It motivates and inspires all of us.

Donny,
Hope you are doing well. America misses your spirited show. You gave a lot!
Here is what I was thinking.
Even though I have been in business with Made in Santa Cruz for 15
years there is still so much to learn. In MISC I find that people are happier
that Bush is Gone and Obama is President, and totally dismayed that the
corruption of our financial leaders left families with broken homes and so
many suffering. Our National lending practices led the unequipped first time home buyer and the home owner who over refinanced their first home into a financial disaster by allowing the adjustable rate loans to dominate lending practices that left many in foreclosure and without a home.
I strongly recommend as part of the Transparency Act to be included:
*All first home loans of US Citizens that pay taxes, be refinanced by
the lending institutions now holding the loans.
*I propose that the U.S. Government pay the said difference to bring all
first home loans down to 4% interest across the board. That will enable
many more to purchase a home which will boost human moral and just
about wipe out foreclosure. It will also give each home owner the extra
money needed to stimulate the economy by refinancing the high adjustable
interest rates. This will get our cash flowing. Yes WE Can.
*I do not know what that amount is that I am asking the government to take
on but I am going to find out.
