Ace chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten filed a lawsuit against developer Yitzchak Tessler, claiming that Tessler had offered to pay him $400,000 to give up the lease on the address formerly occupied by Vongerichten’s Asian restaurant Matsugen. The cook behind a global fine dining empire had rented the space at 66 Leonard Street in Tribeca since 2000, first with the eatery 66 and since 2008 with Matsugen, which in March 2011 announced it would be closing. The suit claims that Tessler told Vongericthen he had a buyer ready to take over the 23,8000-square-foot space and needed the lease terminated and Vongerichten relieved of liability. Neither side offered comment to The Real Deal.
