ArtPlace, a national initiative to deploy culture as a community development tool, is funded privately by a number of major charitable foundations and banks. With $1.2 million from ArtPlace grants, downtown Los Angeles’ revitalization efforts will receive an enormous push.
ArtPlace grants will go to arts and entertainment projects aimed at reviving downtown LA such as CalArts. Conerstone Theater Company, Mercado La Paloma in South Los Angeles and Broadway Arts Center.
Four Los Angeles organizations will receive $1.5 million of the $15.4 million that ArtPlace recently distributed across the country to 47 recipients including the largest downtown Los Angeles grant of $470,000 to L.A.’s Department of Cultural Affairs, which is currently planning the Broadway Arts Center.
The cultural affairs department’s executive director, Olga Garay-English, said that the center could open within five years.
Other recipients include Thom Mayne, an award-winning L.A. architect, who will receive $70,000 of the grant money to develop a larger Broadway Cultural Quarter and CalArts that will receive $50,000 of the grant money to do a study for possible downtown satellite housing for students in acting programs.
ArtPlace is also giving the Southern California Institute of Architecture $400,000 to go toward planning, construction and design of two new venues on its Los Angeles River campus, including a 750-seat pavilion.
