Haute Event: Hearts Open up for Charity at San Francisco’s Heroes and Hearts Luncheon
by Rachel Taylor

“I Left my heart in San Francisco’’ took on a whole new meaning this month when philanthropists, artists and those with hearts of gold, gathered for a compassionate cause at the 6th annual ‘Heroes and Hearts Luncheon’ on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 in San Francisco’s Union Square.
In a joint event, the ‘Hearts in San Francisco’ city-wide fundraiser art project and the ‘Heroes & Hearts Luncheons’ put together a soiree to unveil some of the most talented and eclectic group of artists, who had contributed their time and artistic flair in bringing together a collection of heart shaped artwork for the cause. The collection, which has been on display since Valentines day, composed of 14 pieces both table top and mini statue sizes, were auctioned off with the proceeds going to the San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) . Combined with the artwork, money raised at the event since 2006 has raised nearly $6 million for the foundation and its efforts have helped to fund projects that enhance patient care and comfort at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (SFGH).
Also on the Luncheons agenda was the presentation of the Local Heroes award and the honoring of some of the most outstanding leaders within the community. The ‘Heroes’ of the hour this year were awarded to Judge Mary Morgan, Dewey Rosetti, Dr. Shannon Thyne and John Weidinger. for their compassion, dedication and inspiration within the community. Each were honored as this years heros for successfully addressing and reframing such issues as the way that the justice system supports mental health, improving knowledge of learning disabilities, improving the quality of life of children in need and instilling the value of education directed towards the youth of today society.
The success from the Heroes and Hearts Luncheon not only raised funds and awareness for San Francisco’s medical needs but inspired more individuals that sharing a small piece of your heart can do so much for your community .
The heart shaped sculptures will be on display in Union sq. until Sept 11 and act not only as a reminder of incredible artistic talent but also the underlying message of have a heart , give a heart !
