Haute Exhibit: My Mother’s Clothes
Famous photographer, author and Atlanta native Jeannette Montgomery Barron’s latest work will be exhibited at Jackson Fine Art from July 29 until Aug. 27. Atlanta residents have the rare chance to see Montgomery Barron’s latest work, My Mother’s Clothes, which documents her late mother’s wardrobe through the years in a tribute to her mother’s style and her roots in Atlanta society.
Montgomery Barron started this project when her mother, a prominent Atlanta socialite, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She took familiar textiles (like the table cloth from her mother’s favorite restaurant) and photographed them with the extravagant couture items that hung in her mother’s closet in hopes of stimulating her memory.
These photographs were then compiled into a book My Mother’s Clothes: An Album of Memories, which was released by Random House in March 2010 to much acclaim. The book is collection of Montgomery Barron’s photographs accompanied by written recollections of her moth.
Even if you have seen the book, the exhibit at Jackson Fine Art will provide a whole different kind of visual experience.
Along with the artfully composed photographs of fashion couture over the years, My Mother’s Clothes has a lot to say about the past and the ways in which we love and remember our family.
“Ultimately, this project is a love letter to my mother, Eleanor Wilhelmina Morgan Montgomery Atuk,” states Montgomery Barron.
My Mother’s Clothes will be exhibited at Jackson Fine Art Gallery July 29-Aug. 27.
Jackson Fine Art Gallery is located at 3115 East Shadowlawn Ave., 404.233.3739, www.jacksonfineart.com.
