Restaurant owner NelloBalan knows how to run a restaurant. Balan grew up surrounded by  the hospitality business. Today, he has successfully created one of the Upper East Side’s most beloved havens for celebrities and socialites alike. These A-listers flock to see and be seen at Nello on Madison Avenue. Surrounded by top designer shops with a chic yet simple interior décor,  the eatery keeps regulars coming back for more. The food itself is savory yet simple Italian fare prepared from a menu designed by Nello himself.

How did you begin your career in the culinary field?

I grew up around my grandfather who owned hotels, so I spent most of my childhood traveling and visiting the hotels and then decided to build my own restaurant.

What restaurants did you work at prior?

I did not work in restaurants, I built my own in New York City and recently, Nello Summertime in the Hamptons.

What appetizer, entrée and dessert is your restaurant most known for?

Nobu on 57th, Cipriani Uptown, and Areo in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

I love to drink red wine.

Being with my children.
