La Belle Vie, the colossal residence on St. Cloud Road in Bel-Air built for philanthropist Iris Cantor by her husband, Bernard Gerald Cantor, sold last week for $40 million. Though after two years on the market, the home sold for less than its original asking price of $53 million, the sale was one of the highest this year in Los Angeles County.
The 35,000 square feet mansion designed by architect Michael C.F. Chan features 21 baths, 9 bedrooms, three kitchens, 12 fireplaces, a 40-foot-high rotunda with a curved staircase, an elliptical marble and limestone three-story entrance hall, a two-story paneled library, a master wing with double sitting rooms, a staff wing with three bedrooms, a wine cellar that can hold nearly 5,000 bottles, a gym, and even a beauty salon and a billiard room. Bebe Winkler designed the mansion’s opulent rose and champagne interior, which looks as if a 5-star Parisian hotel met the likes of Marie Antoinette. Outdoor features on the 1.21-acre property, which was designed by landscape architect John Wong, include a pool, fountains, a pavilion, a north/south tennis court, a 10-car garage and a security gatehouse.
