Beyoncé’s staff is not letting Calypso singing great Harry Belafonte get away with recent claims that the pop superstar and her husband, Jay-Z, don’t do enough for the betterment of society. “It is sad. And I think one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities. But they have turned their back on social responsibility,” Belafonte recently said. “That goes for Jay-Z and Beyonce, for example. Give me Bruce Springsteen, and now you’re talking. I really think he is black.”
In addition to a recent visit to the U.N. in advance of World Humanitarian Day, Beyoncé’s reps highlighted her charitable contributions to The Survivor Donation in her native Houston, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.
