Broad made his fortune with his real estate company Kaufman & Broad before founding financial company SunAmerica, where he served as CEO until 2000. He was the founding chairman of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and is a life trustee and member of the executive committee of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). He and his wife have also formed the philanthropic Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and The Broad Art Foundation, of which have assets surpassing $2.5 billion.
