The Saddest Auction Ever
The sad, sad day came and went as we bid adieu to one of our favorite New York institutions, Tavern on the Green. The well-publicized financial troubles put the Manhattan restaurant out of business after 75 years. On Friday, the court-ordered auction drew to a close as elite bidders heard the slam of the gavel for things like the famed crystal chandeliers, a pig-shaped weather vane, as well as the china inventory and kitchen gadgets. Nearly 20,000 items ended up on the block.
The popular and colorful Tiffany glass ceiling earned the highest bid for $180,000, while another Tiffany ceiling piece drew $120,000 and a Tiffany peacock mural went for $75,000.
