Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate Photograph Heads to Christie’s

Posted by: Alison Agudo on December 2nd, 2009

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but how about $10,000 dollars? The famous nude photograph of Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate is estimate to fetch between $8,000 and $10,000 when it is auctioned off during Christie’s Photographs sale in New York on December 7.

The photograph seen around the world (and pictured above) is of French-born, Polish-resident film director, producer, writer, and actor, Roman Polanski and American actress Sharon Tate. The nude photograph was taken by photographer David Bailey in 1969, the same year Tate was murdered.

During Christie’s Photographs sale in New York on December 7, the striking photograph of Polanski and Tate will be auctioned off. It is estimated at $8,000 to $10,000 however, with the current media glare surrounding Polanski’s fugitive states in France, the photograph’s price at auction may increase significantly.

Polanski fled the U.S. in 1978 after being granted $4.5 million bail for charges relating to a 32-year-old case in which he admitted to having sex with a minor. He is currently living as a fugitive in France, however in late October the U.S. government formally requested his extradition.

Polanski and Tate were married in 1968, just a year before the photograph was shot. Tate was eight and a half months pregnant when she was murdered in her home a year later, along with four others, by Charles Manson followers.

As much as people will throttle me for this, I truly feel sorry for Roman Polanski. He survived the Nazi Holocaust only to have his wife and child murdered. What he did to an underage girl was something no parent like myself can accept passively, but since the victim has forgiven him, perhaps his trial could be less of an OJ like circus, and his potential sentence a light one.
