E.C. Gladstone is a seasoned journalist, having covered luxury, travel, food and wine, spas, entertainment, and other beats from coast to coast. A former contributing editor for Niche Media (Vegas Magazine, Ocean Drive), where he produced a record number of cover stories, and staff writer at US Weekly, he’s interviewed celebrities, chefs, musicians and moguls from Eva Longoria and Mary J Blige to Wolfgang Puck and Steven Spielberg. He worked closely with Robin Leach to launch the original wildly successful Luxe Life Vegas blog and has also experienced luxury travel throughout the U.S., Europe and many tropical destinations. At other times, he has been a professional musician and DJ, and a principal investor and creative partner in one of Silver Lake’s most beloved restaurants. He joins the Haute Living team as our dedicated Los Angeles contributor, and he will be covering the luxury lifestyle in Los Angeles and Malibu on a daily basis.

Balance is something often forgotten in the world of restaurants. So many places either focus on high concept—forgetting the factor of merely making people happy—while others stress “comfort food” staples to the point of predictability. That’s why Upper West is such a pleasant surprise.

One day at SLS may certainly be able to erase an entire week. While many designers emulate (even copy) the aesthetics of Phillppe Starck, there is only one hotel in LA to have his design aesthetic on every inch: the SLS. You have never seen a hotel quite like this—or, I confess, I haven’t.

I can’t think of a better way to introduce kids (and even adults) to different cultures than through food and fun. Which makes the Mitsuwa Marketplace’s Summer Festival this weekend such a cool event.

Dick Van Dyke just keeps going. The legendary singer/comedian/dramatist who’s singularly lovable performances in Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and of course the Dick Van Dyke Show have been burned into a generation’s psyches, is still up-and-at-em at 84.

Live music in LA? Wow, have we got that covered. While LA may not be the “live music capital” that Austin, Texas, claims to be, fact is, these days we have an impressive array of venues ranging from a world-class opera house to all kinds of funky little spots. Pick a Haute 5? Sigh, if I must…

‘Tis the season for food fests, apparently. There are several interesting ones coming up in LA in the next few weeks, and while I can’t endorse every one, the 8th annual Plate by Plate event happening this Saturday, August 14, is one I definitely can.
