Warren Buffet’s annual lunch auction was held on Friday and it raised $3.46 million for charity. The event had an extraordinary ending to the evening with a bid that almost tripled from $1.23 million just seconds from the end of the weeklong auction.

Last year’s annual auction raised $2.6 million, and over the past 13 years it has brought in more than $14.6 million for Glide, which serves meals to the needy and runs a church in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco.

Setting a record for the third consecutive year, the annual eBay auction attracted 106 bids. The anonymous winner bid on a dinner with Warren Buffet and seven companions at Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in New York.

Rev. Cecil Williams of the Glide Foundation said, “We just had a most amazing, shocking experience occur in our great city. I am extremely grateful to my friend Warren Buffet for his exceptional commitment.”

Buffett, 81, spoke to Glide workers, volunteers and donors and said, “You change lives. I congratulate you.”

“This is a proven process,” he added. “That a combination of love and time and energy and resources can produce a different human being.”

Over the past year, Glide has served approximately 1 million meals to the poor and has also provided health services.
