New Lumeria Maui Puts ‘Treat’ in Retreat

It’s not often you get to stay in a historic residence on vacation.

And it’s ever rarer if that historic residence is on six ocean-view acres on the North Shore of Maui.

Open in January 2012, Lumeria Maui is a luxury educational retreat center in the charming artsy town of Paia on Maui. It offers classes, programs and retreats in yoga, meditation and watersports with professional instructors such as the legendary Buzzy Kerbox (surfing) and Abigail Perrin (yoga).

But it’s really the grounds that are impressive.

Award-winning architectural conservator and designer Xorin Balbes restored the historic Baldwin Memorial Home, built in 1909 by this prominent sugar cane family. The plantation-style building once housed aging sugar cane plantation workers, served as military housing during World War II, and was used as a dormitory for Maui Land and Pineapple workers. Balbes, who’s famous for high-profile restorations including the lauded 1929 Frank Lloyd Wright Sowden historic house in Los Angeles, transformed this property into a luxurious retreat with an intimate and authentic feel.

There are just 24 spacious guest rooms, suites and private bungalows — some with an additional Indonesian-style daybed — in the collection of five lodge building. The rooms feature restored hardwood floors, ceiling fans, a plantation-style desk and chair, small refrigerator, iPod docking stations, and free WiFi. (Note: there are no TVs or video game consoles here.) Bathrooms have a distinctive Japanese feel, with rain shower heads and river rock shower floors.

Guests are invited to participate in free yoga classes in its 700-square-foot studio — or sometimes on the huge grassy lawn that’s smack in the middle of the encircling buildings. And the restaurant — called the Dining Room — will serve a farm-to-table menu featuring produce from Lumeria’s organic gardens and other local farms.

Rates start at $299 per night plus tax for double occupancy with daily yoga and meditation classes and a light organic breakfast. For more information or to book reservations, call (855) 579-8877 or (808) 579-8877.
