Philanthropists Susan and David Rockefeller, Jr., along with watchmaker Girard-Perregaux, toasted World Oceans Day at MoMA last night with a screening of Susan’s new short film, Mission of Mermaids. The 15-minute documentary tackles the very real issues of overfishing and ocean pollution through the eyes of a mythical mermaid. The mermaid theme continued with waiters dressed as the fanciful sea creatures serving drinks to be enjoyed through stainless steel straws so as to discourage single-use plastic.
Mrs. Rockefeller has long championed nautical preservation as a member of the Ocean Council for Oceana. She previously directed a similarly themed documentary, A Sea Change. Her husband David founded Sailors for the Sea, a non-profit determined to educate the boating community about ocean health. Their guests last night included Gayle King, Nile Rogers, Julie Gilhart and Ricardo Cisneros.
