Mayor Bloomberg Announces Major Governors Island Renovation

Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday announced plans for 30 acres of formal gardens, two new baseball fields and major infrastructure overhauls on Governors Island. The 172-acre island sits just south of Manhattan in the New York Harbor and features commanding views of the Statue of Liberty. In recent years the former base has become a popular destination for New Yorkers, drawing them in with bike rentals, major art exhibits and music festivals. A half-million visitors came last summer, up from 8,000 in 2005.

The $260 million project will shut down the island on Fridays this summer. But free ferry service from Manhattan and Brooklyn will continue the rest of the week to what Bloomberg describes as the “centerpiece of [his] efforts to revitalize New York City’s waterfront.”
