Auction Hits Home Run With Record Setting New York Babe Ruth Jersey

“The Bambino” still breaks records even after his death more than 60 years ago.  George Herman “Babe” Ruth’s first ever New York Yankees jersey was auctioned off for $4,415,658, the highest price ever for a piece of sports memorabilia.

Sold by a private collector, the auctioned off item, at SCP Auctions in Laguna Niguel, Calif., was Ruth’s Yankees jersey he wore his first season in New York circa 1920.

The wool jersey is synonymous with a tale of two cities.  The Boston Red Sox traded Ruth to New York in 1920 and at that time no one could foresee the impact of that move.  Ruth had a record-breaking season and set the Yankees on sail to be one of the most storied and successful sports franchises. Boston, on the other hand, acquired the “Curse of the Bambino” and didn’t win a title in 80 seasons.
