The Madam Tussauds Wax Museum in London unveiled its first figures of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Wednesday. Three versions of them are displayed in London, Amsterdam and New York City.
In London, Kate Middleton, or Catherine, as she is now to be called, wears a replica of the iconic blue Issa dress she wore while announcing her engagement to Prince William to the media and the world. The dress became an instant hit, selling out completely hours later and spawning countless copycat versions. William wears replicas of his Gieves and Hawkes navy two-piece single-breasted suit and Omega Seamaster watch.
No detail in the figures was spared, from Kate’s striking dimples, diamond and sapphire engagement ring and her perfectly coiffed chestnut brown locks to William’s thinning hair. The wax couple stands in front of a gold-trimmed red throne.
According to the museum, William and Kate were kept up-to-date in every stage of the creation process of their wax counterparts.
In New York, the couple is featured in the attire they wore in Los Angeles for the formal BAFTA Brits to Watch event in July, with Kate in a lilac, floor-length Alexander McQueen gown, accessorized with a chunky diamond bracelet and nude clutch and William in a tux. In Amsterdam, Kate wears a replica of the black lace Alice Temperley dress she donned for the premiere of “War Horse” in London this past January.
A team of artists worked for four months to collaborating with the original clothing designers to get every detail just right. Each figure costs about $300,000 to make.
A fourth set will be unveiled later in April at Madame Tussauds Blackpool in northwestern England, with Kate in a pastel and metallic Jenny Packham dress from her appearance at the ARK charity dinner.
The museum has created more than 20 models of the queen over the years.
