The Biennale des Antiquaires, the oldest and most expensive art fair in the world organized by Syndicat des Antiquaires, is expanding. Usually held every two years in France, the high profile event will begin to produce mini fairs from now on during the alternating years when the French show doesn’t take place. The mini art fairs will be held in a slew of new and thriving locations including Istanbul, Moscow and New York. The first mini Biennale is scheduled for Hong Kong, a strategic move in to China and its ever-increasing class of millionaires and billionaires.
Hong Kong is taking over the international art market. According to the European Fine Art Foundation, China has knocked the US off as the world’s largest art and antiques market.
Last year, the Paris Biennale was designed, decorated and managed by Karl Lagerfield. It was during that time that the mini fairs were determined to begin taking place.
