A 110-pound chocolate Easter egg has just sold at auction in London for $10,000, breaking a Guinness World Record for the being the most expensive non-jeweled chocolate egg ever sold. Made by London-based chocolatier William Curley, the egg was bought by technology investor Cyrus Vandrevala.
The egg was handcrafted by seven skilled chocolatiers at Curley’s Twickenham production kitchen over three days. It is made from Amadei chocolate from the Chuao region of Venezuela and filled with award-winning Curley favorites such as muscovado caramel, Japanese black vinegar, rosemary and olive oil, toasted sesame and juniper berry and cassis.
Dubbed “The Golden Speckled Egg,” on the exterior of the massive egg there is edible gold leaf. It was auctioned as part of the Faberge Big Egg Hunt, which raises money for charities Action for Children and Elephant Family. Approximately 200 eggs, each around 2.5 ft tall were created by leading artists, designers, architects and jewelers for the auction and were hidden all over London. To register their finds, egg-hunters can text a code that is located on a plaque by each egg. Bidding ends at 5 p.m. (London time) on April 9.
