Derby Day At The Plaza

On May 5, horses with flashy names like Calypso and Animal Kingdom will sprint around a track, while sear sucker clad men and flamboyant hat wearing women cheer on their horses for two minutes of adrenaline filled racing with serious money on the line at this year’s Kentucky Derby.

Although you may be in New York and not at Churchill Downs for Derby Day, that doesn’t mean you can’t get into the spirit.  The Plaza’s “Rose Club” is hosting an event for the Derby with live coverage beginning at 5pm.

What is a good Derby Day party without fancy hats?  The Plaza has that covered with their  “Best Hat” contest.  The lucky winner will walk away with a signature bottle of Special Edition Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby Bourbon.

With bourbon in mind, the Mint Juleps are ideal for enjoying the Derby festivities.  In fact, since 1938, the Kentucky Derby has promoted the sugary drink as being synonymous with the race.  The Rose Club, which is famed for its cocktails, will be serving up its version of the storied drink this Saturday.

Check out the The Rose Club’s take on the Mint Julip below to get your Kentucky Derby buzz going before, during and after the big race.
