Welsh Aristocrats Plan To Sell Picasso Painting Worth £50m

The Welsh owners of the iconic Picasso painting Child with a Dove plan to sell the painting said to be worth £50m.

The piece is one of the artists’ earliest works. The owners, aristocratic North Wales Aberconway family, asked auction house Christie to find a buyer. The Arts Council of England has also announced intention of sale, which it estimates at £50m as well.

The news sparked fears that the iconic painting may end up abroad, since the British government can’t afford the hefty price tag. It has been exhibited int he UK since the ’70s.

Picasso painted Child with a Dove in 1901 in Paris when he was about 19 years old, which is thought to be a nod to his childhood. His father was a keen amateur pigeon and dove breeder. It is currently on display at the Tate Britain in London as part of its current Picasso exhibition.
