The High Line’s New Art Commission from Jeff Koons
The New York Times’ City Room blog reports exciting news for thrill seekers and adventure enthusiasts. Friends of the High Line, the managing group of the park above the lower westside, is reportedly in talks with famed artist Jeff Koons for a commission and the details are sure to terrify. In a good way. That is to say, the commission in question will not be one of Koons’ signature balloon animal sculptures but rather a replica of a 1943 Baldwin 2900 train locomotive, in its full size, suspended above the walkway from a crane.
The yet-to-be-constructed sculpture will be made of steel and carbon fiber. The sculpture will have some realistic characteristics such as a weight of several tons, wheels that spin, a horn that blows, and emitting steam. The project will cost an estimated $25 million and is not yet funded. So if you’re interested…
