Russian citizens enjoyed turning Irish for the day as Moscow went green for St. Patrick’s Day.
Ridiculous hats, green accessories, colorful characters and glasses of Guinness were abundant as hundreds gathered on Moscow’s historic Old Arbat Street to celebrate the celtic holiday that marks the anniversary of the death of Ireland’s patron saint.
Galway street theatre company Macnas performed in front of curious Muscovites and traditional dancers were present despite the cold weather, except were draped with the quintessential Russia fox pelts. The celebrations began on Friday night with a reception at the Irish Embassy, with Irish Ambassador to Russia Philip McDonagh in attendance.
The massive celebration is evidence of Russia’s effort to adopt more foreign festivities and celebrations as Moscow’s population grows. St. Patty’s day was first celebrated in 1992, along with others like Valentine’s Day and Halloween.
