Mikhail Prokhorov: Russia’s Next Rap Star?

Straight from the streets of Moscow, Mikhail Prokhorov took the stage, mic in hand; he started to spit rhymes, tapping his feet to the beat and fist pumping in ecstasy.  “I am real Russian Eminem,” Prokhorov declared.

His hype men, the hosts of Russia’s “Projector Paris Hilton” energized the crowd even more, calling Prokhorov, “Mr. Jay-Z.”

A week before Russia’s presidential elections, Prokhorov has become Internet famous when a YouTube video of his rap skills hit cyberspace on Thursday.  It seems co-owning the Nets with rapper Jay-Z has had some side effects on the Russian billionaire and presidential candidate.

Although his chances of winning the elections are slim to none- Vladimir Putin is expected to win in a landslide- the Russian public has had an affection for Prokhorov because of his charming demeanor and his easy going aura.  While Putin is declaring a “battle for Russia” at rallies, Prokhorov is showing the world his more playful side.

Prokhorov, who is new to politics, has added freshness to the elections, which has been largely made up of veteran party members vying for the presidency.

With a fortune estimated at $18 billion, the bachelor can dabble in ventures and still come out on top.  Although he may not be the next king of rap, Prokhorov is no William Hong-the American Idol Ricky Martin aficionado- bloggers and sports writers have, for the most part, applauded the Russian oligarchs newest talent.
