Lillian Bassman: A Life, 1917-2012 Displayed At Santa Monica’s Peter Fetterman Gallery

Lillian Bassman’s black-and-white, 1950s-era pictures of confident, well-dressed women are argumentatively timeless, which is probably why they’re back on exhibit at the Peter Fetterman Gallery until June 9.

The show that Fetterman had been planning for his Santa Monica, Calif. gallery suddenly became a memorial when Bassman passed away in February. She lived to see her photos embraced as fine art, and her work was rediscovered in the 1990s.

Lillian Bassman: A Life, 1917-2012 will continue until June 9. It places special emphasis on her lingerie photographs. Among her finest is “It’s a Cinch,” which pictures a model in profile, grasping her corset strings behind her back.
