The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Russian Campaign Posters on Display

It’s politics season and not only in the United States, our Alaskan neighbors, Russia is embroiled in a matchup of the old guard, Vladimir Putin and Dmitry Medvedev vs. ambitious contenders like the Russian oligarch and soon to be Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov.  Of course with any election come the heated ads aimed to better a runner and topple the opponents.

Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russian politicians have used the ad tactic in their campaigns.  Now at Moscow’s State Public Historical Library, an exhibit cumulates all those political posters in one place.  “From the History of Russian Political Technology,” features over 10,000 pieces gathered since 1989.

Although not exactly technologically modern-everything is print form- the exhibit features ads from historical figures such as Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov awkwardly posing for a photo in front of some white Burch trees.

Another poster from the early 1990’s shows then President Boris Yeltsin and a colleague in a hot-air balloon marked “The Russian Economy” dropping weights named “crime” and “corruption.”
