Putin’s Kiss Wins Documentary Award At Sundance

The documentary titled “Putin’s Kiss” won the Documentary Cinematography Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

By Danish director Lise Birk Pedersen, it tells the story of Masha Drokova, a member of the Russian youth movement Nashi, which supports Vladimir Putin (who is the current Prime Minister of Russia and hopes to be reelected). The protagonist is a devoted pro-Putin activist and is famed for kissing her idol on the cheek.

She then gradually changes her beliefs after becoming acquainted with several opposition journalists, including Oleg Kashin, who was severely beaten up in November 2010.

The movie is narrated by reporters, including Kashin himself, and portrays Putin as the antihero.
