Opening of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival

Today marks the opening of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, the annual event that showcases 200 independent films each January. For 11 days, festivalgoers will be treated to documentaries, dramas and short films, as well as live music performances, panel discussions and parties celebrating the event.

Sundance—directed by John Cooper— opened in Park City, Utah with four films: “The Queen of Versailles” by Lauren Greenfield; “Hello I Must Be Going” by Todd Louiso; “Wish You Were Here” by Kieran Darcy-Smith; and “Searching for Sugar Man” by Malik Bendjelloul. Veteran filmmakers—such as Spike Lee and Stephen Frears— will also showcase their work at the festival.

For those who can’t make it to Park City, Sundance will select 10 events—beginning with today’s press conference—to livestream via the Website. The awards night ceremony—held on Jan. 28—will be the final livestream video of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
