Haute Auto :: Rolls-Royce 102EX
by Kimatni D. Rawlins, Automotive Rhythms

Some may think that an all-electric fantasy car from Rolls-Royce would be pretty gaudy. Others might categorize it as a brilliant plot for producing strategic advantages in the ultra-luxury vehicle segment. The 102EX, aka Phantom Experimental Electric (EE), was raised to specifically address the demands and opinions of owners, business executives and the media regarding the company’s position on alternative energy with their vehicles and business model in totality.

Think of the 102EX as either a science or market research project. For 107 years, Rolls-Royce has assiduously experimented with new technologies and finely graded, bespoke luxury amenities. Today’s 6.75-liter V12 gasoline engine and 6-speed transmission duo could indubitably be tomorrow’s sustainability package featuring a lithium-ion battery pack with two 145kW electric motors. A massive Nickel Cobalt Manganese battery stores roughly 230Wh/kg of charge.

When all systems unite seamlessly, the 102EX will propel itself from a standstill to 60 mph in less than eight seconds. It’s quite an anomaly since Rolls- Royce states the electric propulsion system is quite similar to the V12 in terms of performance, ride and handling.

An Atlantic Chrome exterior hue consisting of sixteen coats of paint and the beloved Spirit of Ecstasy accentuated in blue LED light and finished in Makrolon as opposed to stainless steel, will differentiate the 102EX from standard Phantoms. Yet, are any Rolls-Royces standard?
