Comic book enthusiasts can find out what they’d look like as a superhero if they stop by Tate’s Comics in Lauderhill this weekend. Artist George Peréz, who has drawn the likes of Batman, Superman and the Incredible Hulk for famed publishers DC and Marvel, will be sketching customers for a fundraiser at the local store. It’s a part of the three-day event that will benefit the Hero Initiative, a national nonprofit organization that supports comic book artists in need. Each portrait from Peréz, who serves as chairman of the initiative will cost $25.
An exhibit called “Proof of Heroes: The Julius Schwartz Printer’s Proof Cover Collection,” which includes almost 300 printer’s proofs of covers from Schwartz, the iconic DC Comics editor. The proofs are copies of covers sent to Schwartz for his final approval spanning 1964-1974, a key decade of comic books and his 42-year run at DC.
Included in the exhibit is work by famed artists such as Nick Cardy, Murphy Anderson, Neal Adams, Carmine Infantino and Mike Kaluta. Some even contain margin notes by Schwartz and the artists’ signatures. Each is on sale both in-store and online for $100.
DC luminaries Paul Levitz and Alex Saviuk will sign comics from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, and the gallery reception for “Proof of Heroes” is 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The live auction will be held Saturday starting at 6 p.m.
