A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare in the Park

Do you love Shakespeare’s witty prose and memorable characters? Do you also love sitting outside catching a few rays?

If you answered yes to either of these questions then today’s your day.  Pack up a picnic and bring a blanket because for three weeks, free Shakespeare in the park is back.  From Jan. 27 through Jan. 29, the troupe is playing at Shell Lumber in Coconut Grove and then wrapping up their tour in Hollywood.  Previously they played at Pinecrest Gardens in Pinecrest.

For this special midwinter event, Shakespeare in the park is playing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Shakespeare’s famous comedy surrounding the marriage of the Duke of Athens, Theseus, and the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta.

Set in a mystical forest outside of Athens, fairy royalty cause mischief on a band of actors who are attempting to gain fame by playing at the wedding.

Things start to get interesting when Puck, the merry servant of the fairy king Oberon, obtains a magical flower that causes anyone who gets the juice on their eyelids to fall in love with the first person they see.  Love affairs ensue; they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and seemingly this is true.  Titania, the fairy queen, falls in love with Bottom the Weaver, an Athenian craftsman, who has magically turned into a half man half donkey.

Shakespeare in the park director Colleen Stoval orchestrated these ageless characters and their night of mischief into a modernized slapstick comedic style.  This year’s play is one of the most crowd-pleasing plays with the infusion of straightforward language and the humor that’s accessible to all generations.
