Fleet of High-Performance Luxury Vehicles Involved in Accident in Japan

A highway accident involving eight Ferraris, three Mercedes-Benz cars and one Lamborghini Diablo took place over the weekend in Japan.

The fleet of high-performance cars were involved in one of the most expensive accidents in history on the Chugoku Expressway in southwest Japan. The majority of the 14 vehicles, which also include a Japanese supercar Nissan GT-R Skyline and a Toyota Prius, were traveling on the Osaka Prefecture-bound and at least one Mercedes CL600 was driving in the opposite direction.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud noise just moments before the accident and reports indicate that there were terrible driving conditions. Footage of the wreck showed cars, either wrecked or completely destroyed, spread across the highway. Several of the luxury cars were even wedged up against the metal barriers.

Fortunately, none of the drivers were seriously injured. Many of the drivers were foreign car enthusiasts.

The total bill for the damages is expected to hit several million pounds. A new Ferrari 355 alone retails for several hundred thousand pounds. Other Ferraris that were in the pile up include a F512, F355, F430 and a F360.

Reports are indicating that the crash may have occurred when the lead driver hit a central barrier after losing control of his Ferrari while trying to overtake in wet conditions. The cars then hit the central reservation before rebounding into the path of oncoming traffic. This then caused a chain reaction of accidents over several hundred yards as other drives tried to unsuccessfully avoid the accident.

Authorities closed off the highway for more than six hours while they removed the wrecked cars and scraps. Ten men and a woman were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and bruising. No one was yet been charged over the accident.
