Weill Penthouse On the Market for a Stifling $88 Million

Sanford “Sandy” Weill, chief executive (and former chairman) of Citigroup, and wife Joan have put their magnificent NYC penthouse on the market. The mansion-esque residence has much to offer, but is it worth $88 mil?

The Stats: The one-level penthouse is located in NYC’s 15 Central Park West. Spanning 6,744 square feet, with four bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two half baths, it is listed for $88,000,000.

The History: The Weills purchased the penthouse in August of 2007, spending between $43,687,750 and $42,405,000. For a private home in Manhattan, this sale went down as one of the largest amounts paid per square foot. That’s not counting maintenance, which rings in at $13,824 a month.

The Details: 10 rooms, 19 French doors and multiple terraces featuring views of the park and the city are just a few of the palatial apartment’s charming—and extravagant—characteristics. For lounging, the over 825-foot living room with fireplace is ideal. For reading, the Brazilian rosewood-paneled library is just right. For everything else there is the formal dining room, a den featuring a wet bar and a vast eat-in kitchen. Two guest rooms accommodate visitors comfortably.

The Design: The couple hired well-known architect Robert A.M. Stern to design the space. Then they brought in Mica Ertegun of MAC II to do interior designing.

The Money: It has been reported that the couple intends on donating the proceeds from the sale to charities. Specifics remain unknown.

The Neighbors: Also residing at 15 Central Park West are Denzel Washington, Sting and Goldman Sachs CEO and chairman Lloyd Blankfein.

Where will the Weills relocate to if and when their perfect penthouse sells? Perhaps they will move to one of their other homes, like their $31 million mansion in Sonoma, or majorly downsize and live quietly in their other NYC apartment, this one with just one-bedroom.
