Rarely does the public get to see behind the curtain of the lives of celebrities. Recently, Haute Living took a look at the homes of celebrities such as Steve Jobs and Jennifer Aniston through Scott Frances’ lens. Scott Frances is a born and bred New Yorker, whose artistic interest was sparked at a young age. His mother, a magazine editor, was a great influence in his life. Throughout his childhood, Frances was captivated by fundamental modernist ideals. He grew up painting and drawing, and studied fine art and journalism at Northwestern University. An all-around artist, Frances translates his artistic perspective through several means of expression, from photography to writing.
Scott Frances has had the privilege of photographing the home of Steve Jobs, the man who single-handedly changed the world, as we know it. During a one-on-one with the photographer, I asked Frances if he felt a sense of responsibility when photographing celebrity homes. He shared that although celebrities can seem like elusive creatures, they are “not very different from other people. They walk around their house barefoot and in their bathrobes,” just like us. With every snap of his camera, Frances aims to portray his subject in the best light, regardless of who or what it is.
In addition to Jobs and Aniston, Scott Frances has photographed the homes of other notable figures such as Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Jim Belushi, Claire Danes and Clive Davis. His work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine and Departures. When asked whose home, dead or alive, Frances would most like to capture, the photographer stated that his “heroes are architects, (such as) Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen.”
For an interesting twist, my last question for Scott Frances asked if his home had ever been photographed. He laughed at first, and followed with this: “I guess it’s like that saying, ‘the shoemakers children don’t have good shoes,’ no one has ever asked.” Frances shared that although he “cares a lot” about his home, and has “a beautiful collection of art,” he has never thought of publishing it. We for one, think that the role reversal would make for an interesting shoot.
