Nader’s Premieres as Miami’s First Auction House
by Lindsay Theisen

As Art Basel Miami Beach approaches its 10th Anniversary, the city’s luxury good market is marking the arrival of its first-ever full auction house, Nader’s, presented by Gary Nader, owner of Gary Nader Art Centre, the largest fine art gallery in the U.S. The announcement solidifies Miami’s place on the world map as a true player, with Nader’s being the only major auction house outside of New York City or London.

Nader’s kicked off with a cocktail party that allowed denizens of Miami to peruse the modern and contemporary fine art on consignment Nov. 3; and the auction house will officially open with an auction on Dec. 1, timed for Art Basel.

The debut during Basel will feature artists including Warhol, Hirst, Lam, Picasso, Botero and Litchtenstein. The house will continue to grow into Miami’s first full auction house in 2012 when it will feature antiques, cars and wine in addition to world class artworks.

Highlights of the artworks already on consignment include the Roy Lichtenstein iconic large-scale aluminum paint sculpture “Three Brushstrokes,” executed in 1984, estimated at $3 to $5 million. “Three Brushstrokes” is a classic image by a world-class artist that evokes the movement and color of paint on canvas but in a dynamic and exciting new medium.

Perhaps the most exhilarating and atypical set of artworks on consignment are ten ceramics by Pablo Picasso. Inspired by popular traditions and mythology, his ceramic objects such as plates, pitchers, tiles, vases, and plaques created at the Madoura Pottery factory in Vallauris in the South of France between 1947 and 1971 became an iconic expression of his continuous reinvention as an artist. The ceramics are estimated at $1.2 – $1.7 million.

Nader’s will also benefit immensely from Miami’s proximity to Latin America, and will feature approximately $5 million worth of Brazilian artworks in what will be the largest sampling of artworks from the South American country showing at Art Basel.

The auction will take place at the Gary Nader Art Centre located at 62 NE 27th Street in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood, as well as by phone and online.
