Restaurants On My Radar: New Openings

New Yorkers have been blessed with many wonderful restaurant openings this fall. Below are a handful of  team Luxury Attaché’s favorite new dining destinations.

Catch

21 Ninth Avenue, near West 13th Street

The EMM Group, the team behind Abe & Arthur’s and Lexington Brass, has been busy this fall. Catch, which opened in the Meatpacking District in September, is the group’s second new restaurant this season. Top Chef winner Hung Huynh curated a New American, seafood-heavy menu inspired by flavors of Asia and theMediterranean. Highlight dishes include the salt baked whole turbot for two with bloomsfield spinach, forest mushrooms and natural jus and tai snapper sashimi with garlic chips, heirloom radishes and citrus-soy. The multi-level restaurant is connected by floating copper stairs and glass panes surrounding a central piece of timber. The space features chef’s tables and open kitchens on the second and third floors, along with a glassed-in lounge on the rooftop that is open year round.

Mas (la grillade)

26 Seventh Avenue South, near Leroy Street

New to Greenwich Village is Galen Zamarra’s Mas (la grillade), the sister restaurant to acclaimed eatery Mas (Farmhouse). A James Beard Award winner, chef Zamarrauses locally sourced hardwoods as the primary cooking fuel and created the menu with various cooking techniques, such as smoking (hot and cold), steaming, charring and grilling, either over intense heat or slow indirect coals.Featured menu items include smoke-roasted chicken with charred artichokes, a grass-fed burger with smoked tomato ketchup and red eye marinade and mussels en papillote with beer and thyme. Mas (la grillade) seats 80 in a “farmhouse-chic” environment with a homey atmosphere.

Pulqueria

11 Doyers Street, near Pell Street

Christopher and Heather Tierney, the brother-sister duo behind speakeasy Apotheke, have opened a new restaurant and bar called Pulqueria. Located on Doyers Street in Chinatown, Pulqueria focuses on tequila, mezcal, Micheladas and the fermented spirit pulque. Heather, a friend of Luxury Attaché describes the new space as “Fresh, exciting, and fun… a completely different concept [than Apoteke], but equally an original experience. Pulqueria draws inspiration from ancient Aztec culture and the street markets of Mexico City.”

SamSara Café

277 Water Street, near Frankfort Street

New to FiDi is SamSara Café, a restaurant that combines the culinary talents of chef Joshua Elliott, formerly of The Stanton Social, and design skills of horticultural experts Pamela Renna and Eve Luppino, owners of Manhattan Plant Design. The team worked to create a lush natural atmosphere where guests could enjoy green designs while feasting on delicious bites and exotic cocktails. Located just blocks from Wall Street and the South Street Seaport, the new restaurant features seasonal, international cuisine perfect for diners with eclectic palates. The menu consists of small plates for the table to share, such as crispy mushroom and camembert crepes and pulled pork profiteroles, as well as entrees including duck prosciutto and fig flatbread and striped bass a la plancha.

The Tippler

425 West 15th Street, between Ninth and Tenth Avenues

The Tippler, a recently opened cocktail bar in the Meatpacking District, occupies the 3,000-square foot basement beneath Chelsea Market in a space that has not be publicly used for more than 100 years. The venue features classic New York architectural elements such as exposed brick archways, locally salvaged artifacts and train rails from The Highline, and a 40-foot marble bar. The latest venture from mixology consultants the Tippling Bros. (Tad Carducci and Paul Tanguay) and Michael Barrett, former owner of the China Club, it will offer a menu of artfully prepared cocktails, frozen “lushies,” craft beers and simple, small plates.
