With so many spectacular tourist attractions spread throughout the city, it’s hard to know where to start. One great place to begin your tour of the city is at one of the more modern spectacles: the London Eye. The enormous ferris wheel opened to the public in 1999 and despite a number of skeptics that didn’t think it would catch on, it has grown to become one of the world’s most popular tourist attractions.

Another must-see attraction in London is St. Paul’s Cathedral. Re-designed and re-built by Sir Christopher Wren in 1668, the beautiful building is recognized today as one of Britain’s most iconic buildings.

Perhaps a more gruesome, but equally appealing, attraction is the Tower of London, which has been a prison and place of execution for London’s people in the past. Built by William the Conqueror, originally it was intended as a means to try and keep London’s rowdy individuals under control.

If you prefer art to prisons, visit the Tate Modern. London is the modern art capital of Britain and home to works from many esteemed modernists such as Picasso, Matisse, Dali and Andy Warhol.

Enjoyed the royal wedding? Head over to Buckingham Palace, the official home of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. It is one of the most instantly recognizable places on earth and it is open for guided tours where guests can see fantastic art works and experience, at least to some extent, what’s it’s like inside the palace.

For history buffs, head over to the Natural History Museum, which was designed by Alfred Waterhouse and built in 1881 using Victorian building techniques. It was originally constructed to house the growing number of natural history exhibits in the British Museum and subsequently grew into the vast spectacle of a museum that is known around the world for being today.
