Haute 100 Update: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Donate $340K to Somali Aid Group

Hollywood’s humanitarian power couple, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has donated a generous $340,000 to the Humanitarian Initiative Just Relief Aid (HIJRA), a Somali aid group, to assist in expanding its health services to the displaced mothers and children in Somalia’s capital, which is devastated by war and suffering through an overwhelming drought and subsequent famine .
The Horn of Africa nation is suffering through its worst famine in 60 years with an estimated death toll of over 29,000 children under the age of five as a result. The United Nations estimates that an additional 750,000 people are at risk of starving to death in only the next few months.
Mohamed Dahir of the HIJRA says that the couple’s donation will allow the group to expand its lifesaving health services, which currently serve 300 women and children daily in Mogadishu’s Badbaado camp.
