Haute 100 Update: Alicia Keys to both Co-Produce and Compose Music for Broadway Play, ‘Stick Fly’

It looks like 14-time Grammy Award winner Alicia Keys’ creativity is blooming. Not only has she recently made her directorial debut with the film Five, but she has also signed on for multiple production roles in the Broadway play Stick Fly.

Back in July, Keys joined the Stick Fly crew as co-producer but announced on Tuesday, Oct. 4 that she would be composing the play’s music score as well. A representative for the play, which will start rehearsals later this month, said that the “exact placement of the music within the production is still being worked on,” but audiences “should expect original music in the style of Alicia Keys that is used to help propel Lydia’s story along.”

Regarding her additional new role in theatre, Keys said, “As someone who walked up and down this boulevard as a young girl, I cannot describe the thrill of having the opportunity of composing songs for a Broadway show.” She added, “I love the humor and humanity of Stick Fly, and I’m so excited to be a part of the emotional journey this show will take audiences on.”

Stick Fly stars Dulé Hill, Mekhi Phifer, Tracie Thomas, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Rosie Benton, and Condola Rashad. Although previously scheduled to play at the Lyceum Theater, the venue has changed to the Cort Theater. Preview shows begin on Nov. 18 with the official opening on Dec. 8.
