Eastern promise

Step aside Sugar Hut, Blue Elephant et al. Haute Living has a new favourite Thai restaurant: take a bow the newly opened SUDA – a Siamese rice bar situated in the St Martin’s Courtyard in Covent Garden.

Created by S&P, the company that brought us renowned Thai restaurant group Patara, SUDA’s regional menu is divided into sections including small plates, som tam salads, soups, noodle dishes, rice dishes and curries (the sea bass red curry has garnered rave reviews). Desserts include kao niew i-tim ka-ti, sticky rice and homemade coconut ice cream, and ow ni pae guay, a Ginkgo nut and sweet taro mousse.

But it’s not the just food that we have worked ourselves up into a Labrador like lather over: the interior – a design collaboration between renowned Bangkok based design firm IAW Design and UK design agency Harrison Design – also elates. Downstairs, you’ll find wooden tables decorated with Thai grass and rustic wooden stools and walls adorned with images of rice sacks (emphasising the importance of rice in Thai cooking). Upstairs, floor to ceiling windows afford fabulous views of Long Acre.

At the opening party – attended by Mr Kitti Wasinondh, Ambassador of Thailand to the UK – on Thursday evening, there was a real buzz, and deservedly so. SUDA is a superb option for a feast of innovative and delightful Thai cooking, in an elegant environment. We’ll be back.
