Cirque du Soleil Swings Through San Francisco
Cirque du Soleil’s “Totem” makes its San Francisco debut this Friday, October 28, bringing dazzling acrobatics to the big top at AT&T Park.
“Totem” explores the development of the human species, starting from the amphibian form and evolving to the desire for flight. Part science and part story, the performance delves into the history of ancient civilizations as well as the dreams and the potential of humankind. “Totem” features accomplished artists, fanciful costumes and creative set design, including a stage inspired by a giant turtle.
Crew members will spend eight days constructing Cirque du Soleil Village and the blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) at AT&T Park. The main tent stands 62 feet tall and seats 2,600 guests; more than 1,200 pounds of show equipment was brought in on 65 trailers. Some 60 staff members assembled the tent, which is heated and air conditioned to ensure comfort at show time.
More than one and a half million guests have watched “Totem” since it opened in Montreal in April 2010. Due to heavy ticket demand, the show’s San Francisco run has already been extended by two weeks – performances will take place through December 11, 2011.
