Haute 100 Update: Komen CEO Nancy Brinker’s Memoirs Tell the Story of Her Promise to End Breast Cancer

It’s a story that is well known, but its details have only just been published in Nancy Brinker’s new memoir, Promise Me: How a Sister’s Love Launched the Global Movement to End Breast Cancer. The Susan G. Komen Foundation was created by Brinker, who swore to her sister Susan, who was dying of breast cancer, that she would fight to find a cure.

Just in time for the upcoming National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Three Rivers Press released Promise Me, Komen founder and CEO Nancy Brinker’s moving memoir that tells the story of how their love launched a global movement to end breast cancer.

The two sisters, who grew up in postwar Peoria, Illinois, were inseparable. Suzy and Nancy Goodman learned the importance of charity early on in their lives, but it was not until 1977 that Suzy was diagnosed with breast cancer and charity took on a new importance.

Brinker – herself a breast cancer survivor – pours her heart and soul into the memoirs, weaving her own personal experiences in with the staggering facts of the deadly disease. The novel traces through a timeline Brinker’s unwavering dedication to fulfill the promise she made to her sister before her untimely death.

Brinker’s poignant memoir, now out in paperback from Three Rivers Press, travels through the story of how the foundation and its imperative cause came to be – from $200 and a shoebox filled with names to the phenomenal global impact it came to possess as we know it now.
