Haute 100 Update: Gehry’s Luxurious Opus Hong Kong Residential Building Nears Completion; Expected to Break Records for Highest Rent

Renowned architect Frank Gehry’s first residential project in AsiaHong Kong, to be exact – is finally nearing its completion. Opus Hong Kong is an aesthetically stunning 12-story residential building built in a highly exclusive neighborhood on The Peak, a 552-meter high mountain with breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour.

The residential building, under Swire Properties, houses ten luxurious single-story apartments and two additional double-level garden apartments, each with sizes over 6,000 square feet and with spacious balconies and sweeping panoramic views of the city and the harbor. Accordingly, the apartments are likely to set records for the already-opulent city’s highest rents; an apartment of similar size in the city currently fetches nearly HK$400,00 a month.

According to the developer, the building – located at 53 Stubbs Road – consists of “finely tuned glass-enclosed columns form the structure, twisting up around the building like reeds swaying in the breeze.”

Gehry is known for his innovation in design with several world-renowned and characteristically striking structures under his belt. The interior of the building promises to be as visually interesting as its exterior. The developer explained, “Inside, the open-plan apartments flow around a central core, enclosed by a sinuous glass facade and fringed by a series of balconies conceived as ’boat decks‘.”

The design is indicative of Gehry’s penchant for billowing curves and is said to have been inspired by a bauhinia flower.

Additionally, “The delicacy of the building contrasts with its base, an array of artfully stacked stone planter boxes that act as a counterpoint to the lush green surroundings of the site.”
