Haute 100 Exclusive: Pharrell Williams Talks Fashion

As New York Fashion Week 2011 came to a close, I had the special opportunity to chat with one of the fashion industry’s most iconic individuals, Pharrell Williams. Although he is probably best known for his work in the music industry, Pharrell has crossed over to other creative areas including fashion, contemporary art, and interior design.

The sky is the limit for Pharrell, as he has achieved success with virtually every one of his endeavors. When the all-around-artist decided to break into interior design, he stopped at nothing and created a collection of exceptional chairs by joining forces with Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin in Paris. His unparalleled eye and flare for all things creative have cemented his credibility and value in the world of art.

Pharrell’s pivotal contribution to fashion includes the sensation of his clothing brands Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream, as well as his sunglass and jewelry collection for Louis Vuitton, entitled Blason. In 2005, Esquire magazine named Mr. Williams the best-dressed man in the world.

Over the course of our conversation, he shared his thoughts and experiences during New York Fashion Week, as well as insight into the designers and brands he most admires. What a way to close out a week filled with foreword thinking and creativity!

RA: New York Fashion Week is one of the best times to be in the city, what do you most look forward to during this time of year?

PW: The production of the shows and seeing what the inspirations were for the designers and how they wanted to express themselves.

RA: What shows do you most look forward to attending?

PW: Ralph Lauren and Marc Jacobs.

RA: How would you define your sense of style?

PW: It’s basically how you feel when you wake up, where you are going, and how the weather will be.

RA: How did you ring in Fashion’s Night Out this year?

PW: I held an event at the Billionaire Boys Club store in Soho NYC. We had a good time, thanks to all the supporters who came by. Launched new BBC shirts and enjoyed some of my new drink Qream.

RA: Who are some of your favorite designers/brands?

PW: Lanvin, Comme Des Garcons, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, Chanel.

RA: Which city has the best overall sense of style?

PW: Tokyo

RA: Do you think you would ever design a women’s collection?

PW: That would be fun. A lot of hard work though.

RA: I surely speak for ladies across the globe when I say, we certainly hope you do.
