More often than not diners need to forfeit flavor in accordance to specific dietary preferences. There’s now hope for those who wish to indulge. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is offering Lifestyle Cuisine Plus, a menu available upon request catering to guests with specific diet-dependent conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and gluten free, as well as unique dietary preferences including, macrobiotic, raw and vegan diets.
According to a recent article in Gulf News the number of diabetics in the UAE is growing faster than projected and already affects a quarter of the population — 14 years earlier than expected with another 20 per cent of the population being at great risk of developing the diabetes. Dr Abdul Razzak Al Madani, president of the Emirates Diabetes Society, states that guests are becoming more concerned with healthy eating choices than ever before.
Fairmont chefs have been trained to prepare a vast array of special dietary and allergy-specific meals and
are equipped with Nutritionist Pro™ by Axxya Systems (www.axxya.com), cutting-edge recipe analysis
software to help customize entrees and menus to fit with guests’ requests for caloric and nutritional
requirements. Utilizing nutrient-rich ingredients, clean cooking methods and local food products, diners
at Fairmont, whether in a restaurant, bar, banquet or in- room, can be sure that dishes are wholesome,
balanced and full of taste. Guests with specific food allergies and sensitivities are invited to have a direct
conversation with the chef in order to plan their food options during their stay.
While the same nutritional parameters guide Fairmont chefs across the globe, actual menu offerings will
reflect the distinctive style and unique food products of each destination. A sampling includes; Arame with Sunflower Seeds, Chives and Mustard (macrobiotic – Fairmont Beijing); Zucchini, Carrot, Portobello and Cashew Butter Pave (raw – Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club); Cornish Crab Cake and Marinated Cucumber & Grapefruit Salad with Homemade Aioli (gluten free – Fairmont Bab Al Bahr) and Samak Harrah: Grilled Hammour with Spicy Tomato Sauce (gluten free – Fairmont Bab Al Bahr).

common dietary requests found among guests, such as low-fat, vegetarian and low-carbohydrate concerns.
Complementing the new menus are Lifestyle beverages, offering five new varieties of Fairmont wellness
teas, juices, shakes and more to quench thirst.
Guests can enjoy these flavors in their own homes too, by visiting www.everyonesanoriginal.com, for original recipes for appetizers, entrees, desserts and beverages from the Lifestyle Cuisine and Lifestyle Cuisine Plus menus. A mix of customer-generated media and non-traditional Fairmont content, the online site is a virtual gathering place where fans of the brand can post photos or videos from a memorable trip, participate in exclusive polls and contests, access exclusive hotel and destination content, and of course find recipes from across the Fairmont collection.
The Venetian and the Palazzo kicked off the second annual Festivino, a celebration of Bordeaux throughout October, with a wine tasting event tonight in the Palazzo waterfall atrium and gardens. More than 200 guests sipped on wines from acclaimed wineries such as Château Giscours and Reserve de Barons de Rothschild while enjoying small bites from restaurants including Zine, Aquaknox, Bouchon, First Food & Bar, Carnevino and Venetian Executive Chef Olivier Dubreuil.
Master sommeliers were on hand to provide insights into the wine and what makes Bordeaux wine in a class of its own. Surrounded by the unique Harvest Crush autumn display featuring more than 10,000 grape clusters, 30 wine casks and 1,000 pounds of wine corks donated from the resorts’ restaurants, guests enjoyed the sounds of a violin trio and grape stomping performers.
Festivino will continue through October featuring prix fixe menus with Bordeaux pairings at Morels French Steakhouse & Bistro and Pinot Brasserie, two-for-one Bordeaux by the glass at select restaurants and bars at the resorts and flights of quality Bordeaux wines at casino bars and lounges. Additionally, The Venetian and The Palazzo are offering a Bordeaux suite package including complimentary bottles of wine. For more information on Festivino, please visit www.venetian.com/festivino.

It’s the height of the Indian summer in wine country and enjoy these last warm days with a fabulous hat and walking about lush grounds, wine in hand, to stomp on some divots.
Now into it’s 27th year, the Polo in the Park event always draws a wonderful crowd of equine enthusiasts. On October 8th, Saturday from noon through 5PM at the Wine Country Polo Club in Santa Rosa, the event will feature a silent auction, fancy hat promenade and competition, fashion show, catered lunch, wine tasting, and of course polo. The Mistress of Ceremonies will be Ms. Renee Richardson from KFOG radio.
Prior to Saturday’s daytime festivities will be a Gala hosted in a private residence and catered by a local star chef with wine pairings. The Gala will also feature Grammy Award Winner Tony Lindsay, guest appearance Eoin Harrington, a fashion show presented by “Decades of Fashion” featuring a glorious century of ladies’ attire from 1900 — 2000, dancing under the stars, and a live auction.
More importantly both of these event benefits the James S. Brady Therapeutic Riding Program has helped more than 100 students a year suffering from autism, cerebral palsy, muscle weakness, sight & hearing impairment, learning disabilities, and social disorders. Students of all ages, under the instruction of a nationally-certified instructor, learn anatomy, grooming, horsemanship, & riding, in addition to building trust, increasing confidence and improving self-esteem through a relationship with these magnificent creatures.
Event tickets range from $85 for individual entry to $3,000 for a table of 8 at the Churchill Tent which includes a served luncheon. Gala tickets are $200. Purchase tickets at www.sfpolointhepark.com/tickets

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Jerrold Nadler – the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and lead sponsor of the Uniting American Families Act – led 67 additional Members of Congress in advocating the protection of LGBT binational families from unnecessary deportation.
The 69 members banded together and sent letters to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder requesting that LGBT family ties be taken under consideration in ongoing deportation cases involving binational same-sex couples.
The letters read: “The recognition of LGBT family ties as a positive factor is a critical step forward in identifying key family and community ties to implement common-sense immigrations enforcement. We ask that you ensure that this recognition is reflected in the work of DHS and DOJ employees and the newly-established working group in implementing your priorities for immigration enforcement… Without specific guidance, it is unlikely that the agency officers, agents, and attorneys making decisions about individual cases will be aware that LGBT family ties are a factor for consideration exercising discretion in closing or not initiating removal proceedings.”
The Obama administration had recently announced a concerted effort to prioritize immigration enforcement and, while the importance of recognizing family ties in analyzing immigration cases was discussed, it was not explicitly stated that LGBT family ties – including those of spouses and partners of US citizens and residents – be included in that effort.
