When you think of fashion icons you may not immediately go to Steve Jobs for inspiration. But something about the jeans and black turtleneck look sparked an interesting comment by acclaimed couturier Ralph Rucci.

While many assume Steve Jobs is just too busy planning the next big iThing to care about what he wears, others are speculating that, in fact, Jobs is somewhat of a fashion icon in his own right.

In the September issue of Vanity Fair magazine, Rucci noted how derivative fashion has become in today’s society. He said his “contemporaries seem more intent on recycling the past, with recent runway shows pegged to themes like surfers, retro 1950s, Liberace, and even Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde.” Rucci believes that these collections ultimately become a bore and are essentially very easy to do. He adds, “What’s astonishingly difficult to do is to create apparel hat doesn’t have any references in the past.”

Without specifically naming Jobs, Rucci hints that perhaps what is “wholly original includes three things: a white cotton T-shirt, a pair of 501 Levi Strauss jeans and a black cashmere turtleneck.” Sound familiar?

Rucci names Coco Chanel as his example of an original dresser, however his comments beg the question, Steve Jobs: Fashion Icon or just wrong?
